Organic and Carbon Aerogels

Processes for synthesizing organic aerogels and for pyrolyzing them to make carbon aerogels.

Organic Aerogels

The synthesis of organic aerogels (of resorcinol-formaldehyde polymer, to be exact) based on the work of Dr. Rick Pekala and co-workers at Lawrence Livermore. They are cranberry-sauce red and are suitable precursors to carbon aerogels. Use the Pyrolysis procedure to make carbon aerogels from them.

Pyrolysis

Procedure for producing carbon aerogels and other derivative aerogels prepared by heat-treating aerogel precursors.
